Cairns 24 Hour Mega Swim

Wednesday, June 22nd, 2011

The 24 Hour Mega Swim is a community event encouraging people of all genres to take part in fundraising for Multiple Sclerosis. The Swim is comprised of no more than 15 swimmers per team. Each team must have one swimmer in the water for the entire 24 hours. Swimmers are then asked to raise money through sponsorship of themselves or their team.

The first North Queensland 24 Hour Mega took place in Cairns on the 14th May, 2011 at the TAS Aquatic Centre with 11 teams participating.  Skytrans sponsored the Aquatic Aquanauts team who raised $3,172.50 and came third place for fundraising dollars.  They swam 68.1km during the 24 hours and came fourth place for distance swum per team.  Way to go Aquatic Aquanauts!!  Skytrans also provided the use of our marquees for the event.

The Cairns 24 Hour Mega Swim was a huge success and raised an amazing $25,383.00.  Funds raised from the 24 Hour Mega Swim supports the Go For Gold Foundation which provides scholarships to people living with Multiple Sclerosis to aspire and achieve to the best of their ability and also contributes to Financial Assistance Programs to provide direct and immediate support for people living with MS.

Congratulations on a fantastic job to all who participated over the weekend!

The Budgies of Boulia

Wednesday, June 8th, 2011

Far North Queensland tour operators Sicklebill Safaris offer guided bird and wildlife tours around the Cairns area, throughout Australia as well as too many overseas destinations. Most tours are designed for bird and wildlife enthusiasts whether they are beginners, experienced listers after specific species, or photographers. However, in recent years they have had great success, particularly in Japan, with their Companion Bird Tours which take owners to see their pets’ relatives in the wild.  One of the most popular venues is Boulia where at the right time of year it is possible to see vast flocks of budgies, a popular pet in most parts of the world. During the dry season the lack of water in the surrounding dry country acts like a magnet to the birds in so that they congregate around the towns areas of standing water. Last year there were several hundred roosting in the trees outside the hotel!

Flying into Mt Isa on Skytrans with their guide, the small groups travel to Boulia where they spend the next few days exploring the local area looking at the birds. Members of the parrot family are popular pets and the Boulia area is home to a large number of them so clients can see wild Cockatiels, Galahs, Little Corellas, Sulphur-crested Cockatoos and Ring-necked Parakeets, all commonly kept pets, here as well. At the end of the tour which lasts only usually lasts 4 days the group returns to Mt Isa and takes the Skytrans flight back to Cairns.

Companion bird tours are also offered to Cape York where the clients fly Skytrans into either Bamaga or Lockhart River, and further afield around Australia and overseas. The next tour to Boulia is scheduled for early September.

We have had some great sessions on Barra with the best by far being 34 off one snag unbelievable and on fly, with good Fingermark and some very nice Jacks as well. The Salmon are starting to arrive in numbers with catches up to the 5kg common.

The Queenfish continue to give us great fun with fantastic strikes, jumps, a brilliant fighting fish we have caught many over the 1 m with the best going a little under 1.2m approx. 28lb (13kg) together with the odd large GT to 20+kg

All the usual estuary species are here with good catches of Cod, Tarpon, Trevally, Bream, some Mackerel and Coral Trout etc.

Have a look at a couple of pictures taken of happy clients over this period.

Why not jump on Board a Skytrans plane and get up here, but don’t forget to book early bookings are needed in advance.

Mount Isa dance crew impresses at Cairns ‘Stomp the Nard’

Wednesday, June 1st, 2011

In April, five members of the Mount Isa dance crew ‘Stealth Crew’ travelled on Skytrans to Cairns to compete in ‘Stomp the Nard.’ Crew members Jay Jay Generoso, Jericho Young, Edward Farlow, Adam Betteridge, Dennis Ibardolaza, Charlie and Peter Cross worked tirelessly in preparation for the competition.

‘Stomp the Nard’ was held at Fogarty Park, on Saturday the 9th of April and dancers of all ages and styles performed to crowds in excess of 2500. Jay Jay and Jericho participated in a bboy battle against seasoned local dancers, and came away with a draw and a victory.

However, it was the boys’ showcase routine that impressed the crowd. The routine was made up of a combination of tricks, flips, freezes and sophisticated choreography; all of which, the crowd did not expect from a small crew from rural Queensland. Stealth Crew was named best overall performance, and the boys have been invited back next year to compete.

Congratulations to Stealth Crew!!  Your commitment to hard work, community support and mentoring of young dancers has made your community, friends and families incredibly proud.
