Students Take Off in Kowanyama

Tuesday, June 26th, 2012

On Thursday 21st June, Skytrans staff travelled to Kowanyama to award school students as part of the Skytrans Take Off Program.  The program recognises students who have achieved outstanding attendance levels throughout the semester, by rewarding them with certificates and the much anticipated Skytrans showbags.

This semester the attendance level was set high at 95%, by acting deputy principal of Kowanyama State School, Tal Mitchell, yet we still had an impressive 59 students reach the target.

The students enjoyed the fun and healthy contents of the showbags, including fresh fruit and new toothbrushes, as they took a private tour of the aircraft.  In addition, students who reached 100% attendance will go in the draw to win return airfares for them and a family member to travel to Cairns!

“It’s great to see such a high number of students reach the target, especially as it was set higher than in previous years.” said Chelly Hewson, Skytrans Community Development Coordinator.  “It’s so satisfying to know that our initiative is making a difference in the community and providing an added incentive for the kids to get to school and get engaged”

Surat Mining and Energy Expo

Monday, June 25th, 2012

The 20th and 21st of June saw Skytrans at the Surat Basin Mining and Energy Expo held in Toowoomba.  We had a great time in Toowoomba showcasing our charter operations as well as promoting the new service between Toowoomba and Sydney.

This new service is garnering great interest in Toowoomba and bookings are strong.  Skytrans also sponsored the Exhibitor Networking function on the Wednesday night that was attended by over 400 people.

Skytrans looks to participate in many more events in Toowoomba as we continue to strengthen our ties with the Darling Downs.

2012 Cunnamulla Miss Showgirl

Wednesday, June 13th, 2012

This year marks the 58th annual Cunnamulla Show, with eight lovely show girl entrants.  Since early this year the entrants have been carrying out a variety of fundraising events, promoting the show and selling tickets to the Cunnamulla Show ball, which was held on the 19th of May.Thank you to Skytrans and Grand Mercure Apartments Twin Waters for being the major sponsors of our Show Girl Awards.

The Miss Showgirl Awards had eight final contestants this year: Olivia Taylor, Grace Patterson, Tarna Rogers, Katrina Osborne, Jana Burey, Danielle Clow, Samantha Darcy & Tina Morris.

The girls participated in a series of community events including ‘Fashions of the Field’ at our local ANZAC day races, cake stalls, selling tickets for raffles and the Cunnamulla Show Ball, meet and greet evening dinner, individual interviews, and various public speaking events.  At each event our four judges; Melissa Bryan, Amy McKenzie, Josephine Clark and Cr Mayor Lindsay Godfrey, were scoring the girls on their personality, local knowledge, deportment, public speaking abilities.

The judges stated that this year’s entrants were quiet knowledgeable in their local show and community surroundings and had quite a task in picking a winner, however after much deliberation, awards went to –

Olivia Taylor              2012 Miss Showgirl Personality

Katrina Osborne       2012 Miss Charity (who raised $1628)

Katrina Osborn         2012 Miss Show Girl Runner-up

Danielle Clow           2012 Miss Show Girl Awards Winner

Danielle Clow is 19 year old Hassad Jillaroo, who works on a local property approximately 70kms out of Cunnamulla.  Danielle moved here from near Orange NSW. Danielle states that her experience as a show girl entrant was a great way to meet other young ladies in the community and also to get to know the community better.

Danielle will now compete at the South West Regional Miss Show Girl Awards on the 23rd June in Chinchillia.

On behalf of our 2012 Miss Show Girl winner Danielle Clow and the Cunnamulla and District Show Society, I would like to thank Skytrans for the their wonderful major prize donation for this years’ Miss Show girl winner.  Without generous donations from the likes of Skytrans and Grand Mecure Apartments, as well as the support and donation from local Business houses, these Awards would not be possible.

Xstrata Mount Isa Mining Expo 2012

Tuesday, June 5th, 2012

For the third year running, Skytrans participated in the Xstrata Mount Isa Mining Expo.  Held over three days from May 16 -18, it is reported to be the largest eastern annual Mining Expo in Australia. This year, we were joined by our partners from the Skytrans Cairns Taipans including player Alex Loughton, assistant coach Mick Downer and sales manager Matt Bolton.  Joe Blake even made an appearance and was a favourite with kids and grown-ups alike.

As part of our booth this year, we gave away free slushies with the

purchase of any ticket in our Relay for Life Fund Raising Raffle.  This was very successful and we raised over $550 over the three days.

Thanks Mount Isa!!  Also, along with the slushies and thanks to the Taipans with their inflatable basketball hoop, Skytrans was awarded the most interactive booth this year.

Our entire team enjoyed the time spent in Mount Isa for this year’s expo.  It is great to see the relationships that have grown and strengthened over the years with so many Mount Isa businesses and identities.

We all look forward to a continuing our role in keeping Mount Isa connected to Cairns and other communities in the area that look to Mount Isa as an important link to the rest of Australia.

See you at the 2013 expo!

As Australia’s first travel trade ready program showcasing regional Queensland, the launch of Skytrans new Destinations Guide’ holiday program on Tuesday, 29 May is a significant commitment from the airline to showcase the state’s better kept secrets.

The managing director of Skytrans, Simon Wild is delighted with the finished product that was three years in the making. “Destinations allows us to give back to Queensland’s heartland – the old fashioned way – by telling stories that will fire your imagination and stimulate renewed interest in the Queensland Outback and Cape York experience.”

Destinations has been developed by Skytrans in conjunction with Australia’s leading tourism business development company, Parker Travel Collection – who will now work with Skytrans to market the campaign world-wide starting with an official launch to travel trade at next month’s Australian Tourism Exchange (ATE) in Perth.

According to Todd Parker, managing director, Parker Travel Collection, the ‘Destinations Guide’ is an authentic and compelling insight into Queensland’s six country regions as well as Skytrans’ two gateway hubs of Cairns and Brisbane. Each region is clearly identified while incorporating an appealing combination of hotels, touring product and events for standalone sale.

“In its region by region showcase, the ‘Destinations Guide’ takes its cue from major events featured in Tourism Queensland’s Outback Eventures’ initiative that will then be independently packaged and promoted starting with the Mount Isa rodeo in August,” he said.

 In brief, Destinations:

  • Features six country and two city regions across Queensland – Toowoomba/Cunnamulla, Corner Country (Quilpie and Charleville), Channel Country (Birdsville, Bedourie, Boulia), Mount Isa, Gulf (Karumba and Normanton), Cape (Tip and Coen), Brisbane and Cairns.
  • Travel Trade Ready – Commission offered on all products for domestic and international distribution.
  •  ‘Things to Do’ – Listed in each area along with other local information (description and temperature guides), events supported by Tourism Queensland as part of its Eventures and Adventures campaigns.
  • Initial Distribution – Skytrans network (in-flight, website, consumer database), travel trade (retail, domestic wholesale and international inbound) as well as all visitor information centres throughout regional Queensland.
  • Packaging – Launch campaign will be followed by a succession of packages focussing solely on an event/activity starting with the Mount Isa Rodeo.

Skytrans is a Queensland owned company with 20 years of operating history and a fleet of Dash-8 aircraft flying to 24 ports around Queensland and now New South Wales on scheduled and charter services. All flights feature full in-flight service, movies, and quality catering.
