Boulia
Location
The Boulia Shire covers over 60,000 sq km of Queensland's far west with a population of around 500 with Boulia town's population around 250. Boulia is the capital of the Channel Country and is situated 330 km south of Mt Isa and is approximately 2000 km from Brisbane.
The Channel Country's naturally treeless plains are highly regarded as grazing country despite the boom and bust cycle of floods and droughts. Once home to hundreds of thousands of sheep the Boulia district grasslands are now predominantly grazed by beef and cattle.
Boulia is chiefly known for the unexplained phenomenon of the Min Min light. Travellers have often reported being followed by a ball of light however there is no scientific explanation yet to be discovered by the light.
A must see event is the Boulia Camel Races held annually on the third weekend in July. A three night, two day event including great entertainment and attracts people from all over the world. The town bursts at the seams with around 3000 people coming in for the weekend.
Boulia is a welcome oasis in the outback. With amenities including a 18 hole sand green golf course, undercover tennis and indoor cricket pitch, a 25 metre pool, impressive rodeo arena and a town oval, Boulia is one of the best equipped towns in the outback.
