Charleville
Location
Charleville is an attractive town located 750 km from Brisbane and is 300m above sea level. It is the largest town and administrative centre of the Murweh Shire which covers an area of approximately 44000 sq. km. Charleville is situated on the banks of the Warrego River. Rivers provide much needed water and great fishing. Charleville has a population of approximately 3500 people.
Predominantly a pastoral area, the towns of the Murweh Shire have diverse industries with cattle production growing over the last 10 years due to the healthy mulga country. The sheep industry has declined however since the opening of the Western Exporters Plant in 1997. Goats have become one of the primary industries for the area with goat meat being exported to over 30 countries. Another thriving industry is harvesting and processing of kangaroo. Tourism plays a major role in boosting the local economy with over 35000 visitors to the Shire.
History
In the 1920's the town was at the forefront of the country's infant aviation industry and on 2 November 1922 the first regular Qantas service took off from Charleville. These links are still very important and the town is home to the southern Queensland base of the Royal Flying Doctor Service.
Charleville has several tourist attractions including a museum of the Royal Flying Doctor Service of Australia, a historical museum, wildlife sanctuary (including a bilby reserve) and the Cosmos Centre. It is also enshrined in music by Slim Dusty in his country music song 'Charleville'.
