Northern Peninsula Area

Location

The Northern Peninsula Area Region is a Local Government Area located in Far North Queensland, covering areas on the northwestern coast of Cape York Peninsula.

History

It was created in March 2008 out of three Aboriginal Shires and two autonomous Island Councils during a period of statewide local government reform.

The Region was created on 15 March 2008 from five previous entities — the Bamaga and Seisia Island Councils, and the Injinoo, New Mapoon and Umagico Aboriginal Councils.

The inhabitants of Bamaga Island and Seisia Island Councils came from Saibai and adjoining islands, northern Torres Strait. The name 'Seisia' came from the first letters of several family names of Saibai islanders. They settled at Red Island Point, west of Seisia, in 1947.

New Mapoon, between Seisia and Bamaga, was established in the late 1950s by inhabitants of Weipa and Mapoon. Umagico is south of Bamaga. Further south is Injinoo, known as Cowal Creek from the days of a Church of England mission (1918) until 1989. Its area includes the swamp lands around the Jardine River.

Bamaga is the main town with shops, school, hospital, sports centre, hotel and cultural centre.

Restrictions

Important restrictions on the type and quantity of liquor that can be brought into various remote indigenous communities have been gradually implemented in Queensland.

Alcohol Management Plans have been developed by Community Justice Groups and contain recommendations for declaring all or part of a community area either a 'Restricted Area' and/or a 'Dry Place'.

People who live in, or are planning to visit, travel through or pass near a community which they feel may have restrictions should ensure they are aware of the laws. Bag checks can and will happen and severe fines apply if people are caught.

For detailed information by community visit the Queensland Government Office of Liquor and Gaming Regulation website.
